✅ Pro Tips for Perfectly Crispy Homemade Waffles
🔥 Master the Batter
- Let the batter rest for 30 minutes to 1 hour before cooking—this helps develop flavor and improves texture.
- Don’t overmix! A slightly lumpy batter makes lighter, fluffier waffles.
🧇 Nail the Cooking Process
- Preheat your waffle iron properly. A hot waffle maker = crispy waffles!
- Avoid over-greasing. Too much butter or spray can make waffles greasy instead of crunchy.
- Wait for the steam to stop before opening the waffle maker—this ensures fully cooked, golden waffles.
😋 Boost the Flavor
- Add a dash of cinnamon, or a hint of citrus zest for extra depth. Like in my blueberry and lemon waffles recipe !!!
- Dust the waffle plates with powdered sugar before cooking for a lightly caramelized, crispy edge.
❄️ Storage & Freezing Tips
- Refrigerate: Store waffles in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or toaster for the best texture.
- Freeze: Stack waffles with parchment paper between each and freeze for up to 3 months.
- Best ways to reheat crispy waffles:
✅ Oven: Bake at 350°F (180°C) for 5-7 minutes.
✅ Toaster: Quick and easy for a perfect crunch.
✅ Waffle Maker: The best way to restore that fresh-made crispness!
In short, make a big batch, because crispy waffles are always a winner. My kids love them! 🔥🧇

Preparation
- Preheat waffle iron over medium heat.
- Pour flour, brown sugar, baking powder and salt into a large bowl and mix well.
- In a separate bowl, add eggs, milk, oil and rum, then whisk to combine. Add to dry ingredients and whisk vigorously to break up any lumps.
- Pour in the mixture, about one cup at a time (see your waffle iron’s instruction manual) and cook for 3-4 minutes until the waffle is cooked and golden-brown. Obviously, cooking times vary from one waffle iron to another. Once again, read the guide! You can keep them in the oven at 200°F (but don’t stack them), but waffles tend to soften quickly. I suggest serving them as you go, for optimum freshness! Garnish with fresh fruit on top, butter and lots of maple syrup!
– Lack of fat!Add a little melted butter or oil to the batter.
– Poorly greased waffle iron? Even if some waffle irons are non-stick, a light spray or brush with a little oil can help.
– Don’t remove them too soon. Wait for the steam to die down before opening the waffle iron, otherwise they may tear.
– Yes, waffle batter can be prepared up to 24 hours in advance and stored in the fridge.
– Remember to stir it well before cooking, as the ingredients may separate slightly.
– Not really… A waffle iron is essential to achieve that unique texture. The same principle as a person without legs probably can’t walk.
