🥕 The ultra-simple air fryer side dish

These air fryer carrots are the perfect side dish when you want something delicious without breaking your head. Five minutes of prep, 15 to 20 minutes in the air fryer, and you have a dish of caramelized carrots, tender on the inside and slightly crispy on the edges. The honey + smoked paprika create a natural glaze that pairs with pretty much anything you can serve alongside. It’s exactly the kind of recipe I love developing in my air fryer series. Efficient, flavorful, accessible to everyone.

🍯 Why this combination works

The honey brings the natural caramelization that makes all the difference with air fryer carrots. The garlic powder will distribute evenly without burning like fresh garlic would, and the smoked paprika gives that little barbecue touch that transforms a simple carrot into a special side dish. The key is to coat the carrots well before cooking. Each piece should shine with oil and spices. Cut the carrots in half lengthwise to expose maximum surface to the air fryer heat, that’s where the caramelization magic happens.

🍽️ Ultra versatile. Serves everything

This recipe is designed to be served alongside any main dish of your week. Serve these air fryer carrots with a the best air fryer pork tenderloin, a air fryer salmon with honey and mustard, a grilled steak on the BBQ or any baked fish. You can even serve them at Sunday brunch as a replacement for hash browns. That’s the beauty of a good homemade side dish. It saves your weeknight dinners without ever demanding effort from you.

🔥 Tips and tricks for perfect air fryer carrots

🥕 Garden or nantes carrots, not standard grocery store

Standard grocery store carrots are often too long to fit in an air fryer basket. Use nantes carrots (short and tender), market carrots or directly from the garden. If you only have long ones, cut them in half or thirds lengthwise, but the result won’t be as visually appealing.

🍯 Honey = natural caramelization

It’s the star ingredient of this recipe. Honey caramelizes under the air fryer heat and gives the carrots that beautiful golden color and slightly sweet taste that makes them irresistible. Don’t replace it with sugar. It doesn’t give the same result.

🍁 Maple syrup variation

If you want a 100% Quebecois touch, replace the honey with 1 tbsp maple syrup. The result is slightly different, a bit less sweet, more woody, but just as delicious and perfect for a fall or winter dinner.

🌡️ Preheating is important

Always preheat your air fryer 3 to 5 minutes before placing the carrots in it. This allows for more even cooking and better caramelization from the start. Without preheating, your carrots risk being softer and less golden.

🔄 Shake halfway through, no exceptions

Around the 8th or 10th minute, take out the basket and shake it to turn the carrots. This is essential for even cooking and for all pieces to develop their little caramelized zones. Without shaking, some will overcook while others stay pale.

📏 Single layer, never piled up

Don’t overload the basket. Carrots must be in a single layer so hot air circulates around each piece. If you have more than 2 lb to cook, do it in two batches. It’s better than having soft and sad carrots.

Frequently asked questions

Nantes carrots (short and tender) or garden or market carrots are perfect. Standard grocery store carrots are often too long to fit in the basket. If that’s all you have, cut them in three or four lengthwise.

Absolutely. Replace honey with 1 tbsp maple syrup for a 100% Quebecois version. The taste is slightly different, more woody, a bit less sweet, but just as delicious. Perfect for a fall dinner.

Between 15 and 20 minutes at 400°F (205°C), depending on carrot size. Thinner nantes carrots will be ready around 15 minutes, larger ones around 18 to 20 minutes. Always check doneness by piercing a carrot with a fork. It should be tender but not mushy.

Three possible reasons: you didn’t preheat the air fryer (essential for caramelization), you overloaded the basket (carrots must be in a single layer), or you didn’t put enough oil and honey (the mixture must coat each carrot well). Check these three elements before the next cooking.

It’s the ultra-versatile side dish. Serve them with my the best air fryer pork tenderloin, my air fryer salmon with honey and mustard, a grilled steak on the BBQ or my air fryer potato wedges for a complete side dish combo.
