What’s New for Happy Hour – October 2024
Hey friends!
I’m super excited to announce the launch of a monthly column dedicated to happy hour in Quebec! Every month, we’ll dive into everything that makes our evenings sparkle: new products, events, new spots to check out, tips for creating the perfect atmosphere, and delicious cocktail recipes.
Whether you’re the type to crack open a good bottle of vino with friends, whip up some snacks with whatever’s left in the fridge, or just relax on a terrace with a glass of cider (or a cold beer!), this is the place to be, my friend! Every month, we’ll be celebrating the art of the Quebecois apéro together: local products, unique flavors, and most importantly, a good dose of conviviality.
I can’t wait to share these moments with you! 🥂✨

Welcome to my very first monthly column on happy hour!
Autumn is here, the leaves are turning red, and the days are getting shorter… But that doesn’t mean we’re putting our glasses away! On the contrary, October is the perfect month to sit back with a good drink, enjoy the colors of the season, and savor some comforting bites. Quebec-style happy hour takes on an autumn twist, with flavors of apples, pumpkin, spices, and cocktails that warm the soul.
This month, the cool temperatures came in suddenly—quite a shock! To ease the transition, we’re embracing the season with plenty of exciting new arrivals. So, grab your cozy sweaters and get ready to toast with some great local flavors.
Cheers, and enjoy your autumn happy hour!
NEW PRODUCTS
Each month, our local producers continue to innovate and surprise us with creations that showcase our terroir. In this section, I explore the latest arrivals that have just made their way into the SAQ and specialty shops.
Usually, I’m lucky enough to taste these local products at their launch and share detailed and personal reviews with you. Unfortunately, this month, I didn’t have the chance to get my hands on these exciting new releases. However, I’ve gathered plenty of relevant information that’s sure to whet your appetite!

Passion Fruit Vodka – 3 Lacs
It seems like this vodka will transport you straight to a vacation, with your butt on a beach. If your fingers have been freezing since October started, I think this new product is for you. I’d love to see how it works in a pornstar martini!

Sang d’Ange Superior Absinthe
I’m already familiar with Joual Vert absinthe from the Absintherie des Cantons, so I’d really like to compare it to this new red version. They say its color comes from hibiscus flowers that were added during maceration after distillation.

Comont Rhum
Comont, Comont, Comont—after ready-to-drinks, gins, liqueurs, a vodka, and agave spirits, I’m really curious to taste your rum! I’ve never been disappointed by Comont’s products, so I dare to hope that their rum will also be a delightful surprise. Aged for 18 months in ex-bourbon barrels, it seems that this new spirit is both light, dry, and fruity.

Here’s some more excellent news for the happy hour industry in Quebec!

Book: Creating Your Boreal Gin Without an Alambic or Complications
The new book by Madame Gin, titled Creating Your Boreal Gin Without an Alambic or Complications, is a true ode to creativity and craftsmanship. In this work, Emmanuelle offers readers an accessible and playful approach to making their own boreal gin at home, without the need for sophisticated equipment like an alambic. Garage gin, anyone? It definitely makes me want to give it a try, haha!
From my perspective, this gem stands out because it is incredibly accessible. Yes, it’s aimed at everyone, from curious beginners to gin enthusiasts. By focusing on local plants, Madame Gin encourages an eco-friendly and artisanal approach while highlighting the richness of our terroir’s ingredients. The book doesn’t stop at gin creation; it also includes cocktail recipes that look delicious—perfect for testing your homemade creations and impressing your guests.

Opening: Cherry River Distillery in Quebec City
Cherry River has opened a new distillery to offer their products in a more accessible way to customers in Quebec and the surrounding areas. This project, which started over a year and a half ago, has now become a reality! The new distillery is located on Chemin Saint-Louis, in a former rectory, in the heart of the Sillery neighborhood.
As in their other establishment in Magog, they offer free tastings to allow visitors to discover their beautiful products. Additionally, they bottle their spirits directly on-site!
Address: 1800 Chemin Saint-Louis, Quebec, QC, G1S 1H7
OCTOBER EVENTS
This month, friendliness and sharing are reflected in a multitude of festive events dedicated to happy hour.
1. Zombie Distilleries
Dates: October 31, November 1 & 2 starting at 5 PM
Where: Bar Crocodile (behind Alambika shop)
6484 Saint-Laurent (entrance on Beaubien Street)
For a limited 3-day period, Bar Crocodile is offering a special menu featuring cocktails made with Quebec spirits from distilleries that had to close their doors. This event is also meant to pay tribute to all that these distilleries have accomplished over the years. Distillerie du Saint-Laurent, Distillerie Fils du Roy, and Distillerie La Chaufferie will be highlighted during these three evenings. We love you, rest in peace!
“For passionate entrepreneurs, the true horror is having to prematurely end their project. Over the past year, several remarkable Quebec distilleries have closed after years of hard work.”
The event seems ironically very cool. For our beautiful Quebec distilleries, we sincerely hope this is the only edition of Zombie Distilleries!
2. Mega Halloween Party at Fermentor!
Dates: November 1 starting at 9 PM
Where: Microbrewery Le Fermentor, L’Assomption
Every year, Le Fermentor celebrates Halloween with festivities. This year is no exception. Get ready in a great costume, as there will be prizes for the best costumes, a DJ, and Horror cocktails (I hope they taste good, not horrible).

TIPS & TRICKS
With the arrival of autumn, our happy hours are adorned with warm colors and comforting flavors. It’s the perfect time to explore some seasonal tips and create a unique October atmosphere!
My little tip of the moment is to turn a mini pumpkin into a cocktail glass. It’s a fun and creative idea, perfect for adding an autumnal and festive spirit to your happy hours.
- Select a mini pumpkin that is round and stable, capable of standing upright without rolling. It should be plump enough to hold a few ounces of your favorite cocktail.
- Using a sharp knife, carefully cut the top off the pumpkin to create a “lid.” Make sure the opening is wide enough for you to pour and drink your cocktail.
- Use a spoon to remove the seeds and pulp. Scrape the inside well to ensure the cavity is smooth and clean. You can keep the seeds to roast or use in another recipe!
- If you don’t want your drink to taste like pumpkin, rinse the inside with water and dry it with a cloth. Otherwise, leave a bit of pulp for a touch of natural flavor. You can even store your new vessel in the freezer for later use.

RECIPE
When it comes to happy hour, creative recipes are the key to impressing guests and discovering extraordinary flavors. At Nespresso, each season brings a new limited edition. The Pumpkin Spice Cake capsule is the autumn edition, and it is truly decadent. With its aromas of cinnamon, pumpkin, and cardamom, it’s perfect for a delicious autumn espresso martini. Grab your shaker—it’s time to create some tasty memories!
